Philip was the mechanical one. It wasn't unusual to look out the back door of our home and see someone's motorcycle spread out over the patio in 1,000 parts while Phil was in the process of rebuilding it. One time, an owner came to ckeck progress. He was on crutches with a metal rod sticking out of two sides of his leg cast. Though it would be weeks before the friend could ride again, his bike looked like new. If anything broke around the house, I could usually count on Phil to fix it for me.
Phil put his back out pulling an engine starter and that was followed by at least 7 spinal surgeries. With each one, the discs above degenerated. He became addicted to pain medication and alcohol. All who loved him suffered, especially Julie, Maddy, Walt, Damien, Jamie and me.
It's been exactly ten years now since Phil succumbed to the pain and took his life. How have we carried on? Well, that was a choice we had to make and we did. Happy New Year, my dear son, wherever you are. I love you. (12-31-2009)
